AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse – Which One Is Better?
I know you've heard this before… The money is in the list. Don't make the mistake to put off your listbuilding. Start your list building from day one. (I wish I did!)
Email Marketing is among the the cheapest, fastest and most effective ways to profit online. And the only to manage your email list is with a good a good autoresponder.
How to choose between the many well respected autoresponders?
The two best autoresponders, not just in my eyes, are AWeber and Getresponse. I will include Mailchimp into this comparison because it's many people refer to it as a “FREE AUTORESPONDER” (which in fact it is not…).
Let's compare AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse according to 13 criteria.
This is going to be a huge list… If you're short on time, feel free to scroll down for the summary!
You may want to bookmark it for future reference.
1. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: PRICING
When you're just starting out, pricing matters a lot. Take a closer look at the advanced pricing plans of AWeber, Mailchimp & Getresponse to make an informed decision:
Mailchimp: FREE is NOT Free…
When you take a closer look, you'll find that Mailchimp comes with a lot of hidden fees:
AWeber: The Highest Entry Cost
AWeber also has a two way pricing plan:
The base subscription fee of $19/ month is charged ON TOP of the subscriber pricing. See below for full details:
Getresponse: Winner Over AWeber
Getresponse scores with it's easy to understand pricing. There are no hidden fees other than what you see below.
Face to face pricing comparison:
Mailchimp Vs AWeber Vs Getresponse:
|# Number of Subscribers||MAILCHIMP||AWEBERui||GETRESPONSE|
|up to 500||FREE(up to 12000 emails/month)||$19||$15|
|up to 1,000||$15||$29||$15|
|up to 2,500||$30||$29||$25|
|up to 5,000||$50||$49||$45|
|up to 10,000||$75||$69||$65|
|up to 25,000||$150||$149||$145|
Who thought Mailchimp would be a cheap alternative?
True, getting started is free… BUT Mailchimp actually turns out to be the most expensive on higher volumes.
WINNER = Getresponse!
2. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: AUTORESPONDERS
Mailchimp: AUTORESPONDER = PAID FEATURE!!!
Some people continue to mention MailChimp as a free autoresponder. This is completely wrong. Anyone who mentions MailChimp as a free autoresponder has obviously never used it or used it before 2011 when they changed the autoresponder to a paid feature!
Unlike AWeber, Mailchimp has an action based autoresponder as well (When you're on a paid plan!): You can send emails when people subscribe, click, open or buy!
MailChimp only offers a limited, free service where you build lists and can sent broadcast emails. No autoresponder function is included in the free plan.
Another drawback: It's much more time-consuming to set up autoresponders in Mailchimp than in AWeber or Getresponse.
AWeber: Simple Follow Up Series
AWeber calls the auto responder messages ‘Follow Up Series’:
Aweber only offers a time-based auto responder, not action based like Getresponse.(There is a workaround for this however: You can tag your subscribers when they click and only send emails to this segment of your list).
On the upside, it's very easy to use for just a simple follow up series.
Getresponse: Clever Action-Based Autoresponder
Now this is what I call “clever and easy to use Autoresponder”!
The action based autoresponders help to segment your list. You will find this feature useful when you want to create a new list of only your active subscribers. And you'll also need it when you want to segment your list according to interest (f.ex. send a whole product based follow up series only to people who clicked).
What I like is the calender overview of your campaigns, where you can also display more than one campaign at once:
Through this calender overview you can easily check all or a bunch a of your campaigns with one look. To save time when uploading same message, simply use the PRELOAD FUNCTION!
What is really useful is the time travel function. Let's say you want to send an email at exactly 8AM in your subscribers timezone. Early morning emails are proven to have better open rates.
People who like easy straightforward and don't need more options will be good with AWeber. Unfortunately they don't feature an action based autoresponder and the time travel function.
Ok, Mailchimp also has a action based autoresponder and time travel function like Getresponse. (Paid Feature!)
For me, GetResponse is definitely the best choice. You can set up all kinds of autoresponders and everything is clearly laid out. I also prefer the calendar overview of my similar campaigns.
WINNER = Getresponse!
3. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: AUTOMATION RULES
Mailchimp: Automation Rules Not Available
After some extensive research I found that you can only manually transfer subscribers between your lists.
AWeber: Straight Forward Automation
AWeber has a straight forward approach to create automation rules:
Getresponse: Good But One Rule Missing
Getresponse offers the following automation rules:
What I'm missing here and what would make my life a TON easier is “IF SUBSCRIBE THEN SUBSCRIBED”. So that a new subscriber would automatically be subscribed to a master list. Meaning that you can offer as many giveways as you want, which you send out with your first email. The actual email follow up they would get from the master list only.
Sure, you can preload messages from other campaigns, but what if you make changes? You'll have to make them in each campaign and delete and preload again.
So I chatted with the Live customer support about this automation rule. This was the answer I got: “I’m afraid that’s not an option we offer, no. Having someone in two campaigns would count them as two contacts for billing purposes.”
On the upside, you won't be billed for a higher subscriber volume than you actually have. Because they won't be counted multiple times if they're in multiple campaigns.
WINNER = AWeber
4. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: Drag & Drop Editor
Mailchimp Message Builder
Mailchimp provides an easy drag & drop functionality:
AWeber Message Builder
Also Aweber has an easy drag & drop message builder:
Getresponse Message Builder With Live Mobile Preview
Getresponse also features a drag & drop message builder. On the right hand side you also have a live mobile phone preview. It also includes an inbox preview for tablets and of all different email providers like Gmail, Hotmail & Yahoo.
Drag & Drop Editor Conclusion
All 3 are easy to use with a drag & drop functionality. I just see a slight advantage of Getresponse for being more interactive with the live mobile preview. For me this is important to make sure my first link is ABOVE THE FOLD…
WINNER = Getresponse
5. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: CAMPAIGN SHARING
Mailchimp: Campaign Sharing Not Possible
A function to share your follow up sequence with other accounts is NOT available.
AWeber: Campaign Sharing Made Easy!
AWeber makes it easy for you to share your entire follow up sequence with your team members.
Once you activate “Campaign Sharing”, you will get a special Campaign Code that you can give to others. With this campaign code, your team can pre load your entire follow up sequence into their own accounts in one single step. The campaign code copies the subject line, the body, message intervals, and even the attachments.
You can choose if you like to share your follow ups only, broadcasts only or follow ups and broadcasts. In the next step you will receive a unique campaign code to share with others.
Getresponse: Campaign Sharing Without Password
Even though a bit tricky to find, it's possible with Getresponse to share campaigns with others.
The funny thing is and I confirmed this with the Getresponse support, you do not need any campaign password or campaign code. All you need is the campaign name and you can load someone else's entire follow up sequence…
Security freaks may not like that. But then again, your follow up sequence is public anyway. Anyone can opt in to your list and copy your sequence manually as they receive it.
Campaign Sharing Conclusion
Both AWeber and Getresponse provide a Campaign Sharing Function to share your entire follow up sequence with other people. However, in AWeber it's much easier to find and better organised.
WINNER = AWeber
6. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: OPT IN FORMS
Mailchimp: Design It Yourself
In Mailchimp you literally have to start from scratch. Unless you like blank forms…
AWeber: Over 140 Pre-Designed Forms
In AWeber you have over 140 pre-designed opt in forms to persuade your visitors to opt in. You can also customize your forms with the drag & drop editor.
Top tricks? I'm laughing out loud…
Design is obviously a question of taste. Some people call AWeber forms beautiful, others call them butt ugly.
Getresponse: Vibrant Design & Easy Form Designer
Compared to AWeber, Getresponse has a more leisure kind of look using vibrant colors and fonts.
Opt In Forms Conclusion
Design is up to your taste.
The drag & drop editor of Getresponse makes it easier to customize their forms than AWebers. So just by a slight advantage I'll say:
WINNER = Getresponse
7. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: EMAIL TEMPLATES
Mailchimp: Gallery Of 330 Templates
Although Mailchimp has a good variety of templates, no pre-designed opt-in templates are available.
AWeber: Gallery Of Over 600+ Templates
Aweber has more templates than Getresponse, but NO opt in templates (for emails, not the opt in forms).
Interesting: Some of the recent AWeber email templates have been designed like popular WordPress themes.
Getresponse: Gallery Of Over 500 Free Templates
Email Templates Conclusion
Aweber has a more templates but Getresponse also opt-in templates.
Personally, I never use premade templates for emails. You usually get better delivery rates and lower spam score when you send plain emails. Also consider that plain emails load quicker on mobile.
It's up to your taste.
WINNER = AWeber & Getresponse
8. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: LANDING PAGE CREATOR
Getresponse: Landing Page Creator
Out of the 3, only Getresponse has a Landing Page Creator. Get a sneak peek below:
Here's a simple landing page I created for a demo:
Of course you can add more fields like subheadline, your logo or else.
You can also assign your own domain to the landing page or host it on Getresponse:
To be honest, it was a bit tricky to get the pictute as a full background, but it works. You can drag & drop here as well. For backgrounds, you have a large gallery of pictures to choose from.
You get 1 active page for free with a maximum of 1000 views per month. The landing page creator add-on package is $15/month.
Landing Page Creator Conclusion:
As Getresponse is the only out of the 3 that even has this feature, it's the winner.
Winner = Getresponse
9. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: ANALYTICS
One of the reasons I actually decided for Getresponse was because it was recommended to me for the best analytics. As your list grows, you need to know what's going on so you know what kind of action you need to take.
Mailchimp: Basic Reports
If you like Google Analytics, you can actually track your MailChimp campaigns with Google Analytics. Overall, the Mailchimp analytics are pretty basic. You get the open rate, click rate and the region where the emails were opened.
AWeber: A Lot Of Detail
With AWeber, you have all analytics in one window. Some reports within AWeber give you slightly more data than Getresponse.
Getresponse: Straightforward Analytics
You'll like this layout if you like easy and straight forward. You can also integrate Google Analytics with Getresponse.
Mailchimp is pretty basic. AWeber does a good job at cramming a lot of analatics in the same window. Getresponse on the other hand is more user friendly because it gives you slightsy less data in an easy layout.
WINNER = Getresponse
10. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: 3RD PARTY INTEGRATIONS
If just want to send basic newsletters and follow up emails, then you won't be too much concerned about integrating 3rd party tools with your autoresponder.
From experience I can say, that Aweber, Mailchimp and Getresponse are among the easiest platforms to integrate with 3rd party apps and tools.
Check out Mailchimp Integration Directory for more detail.
Here's what you can integrate with AWeber.
Here's what you can integrate with Getresponse. Anything I use also integrates directly with Getresponse.
True, all 3 providers offer a large range of integrations with 3rd party sites and apps.
For a bunch of Getresponse integrations you will need Zapier to make them work. Easy to do. But if you need A LOT of integrations, AWeber will be the most straight forward for you.
WINNER= Mailchimp & AWeber!
11. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: DELIVERABILITY
This a tough call because everyone has different statistics. I have only actively used Getresponse.
The general opinion used to be that AWeber has the best delivery rates throughout this industry. MailChimp and GetResponse on the other hand, also have deliverability rates in the high 90s. In this regard, they have pulled even.
I bet you won't not notice a real difference between the “Big 3” when it comes to delivery rates. Just don't switch to a smaller provider. Deliverabilty is one of the reasons, why it's always a good choice to go for a popular provider.
12. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: AFFILIATE MARKETING
Out of the 3, Mailchimp is the only one that dos NOT support the work from home & make money online industry. Here an excerpt of their terms:
Affiliate Marketing Conclusion:
WINNER= AWeber & Getresponse!
13. AWeber Vs Mailchimp Vs Getresponse: CUSTOMER SUPPORT
Mailchimp: Only Email Customer Support
When you need immediate help, that won't do much good…
AWeber: Live Support During Available Hours
- Toll Free Phone Number
- International Phone Number
- Text Chat During Available Hours
- Support Hours: Monday to Friday 8AM-8PM ET and on weekends 9AM-5PM ET.
Getresponse: NEW 24/7 Live Chat Support!
This is what I love about Getresponse: You just hit the button on the right corner and most of the time I get instant support like here:
No offence, but this also doesn't look like a callcenter person sitting in Asia… I am VERY happy with the immediate help I get whenever I need it.
Customer Support Conclusion:

Speaking of features, the survey function is a really cool feature of Getresponse I just discovered:
Apparently, with the other 2 platforms, you can only create surveyst through integrations. So this is something I'll definitely be using!!
Because outside platforms that are free, are either really basic, where you can't even put your own thank you page. Or you have to pay a monthly subscription. Like Wufoo Forms or Survey Monkey.

My Personal Recommendation:
If you're deciding between Mailchimp Vs AWeber Vs Getresponse, go for either AWeber or Getresponse. They're both pretty similiar and effective. There are some things you can't do in AWeber that you can do in Getresponse. But also vice versa.
Personally I chose Getresponse for the simplicity, design, the landing page creator and advanced features.
